Dear Support Team,
I am currently using an HP OfficeJet 7740 printer and have been using the 953XL cartridges without issue. However, it appears that the 953XL cartridge has been discontinued. After researching compatible options, I found that the 955XL cartridge is supposed to be compatible with my printer.
I purchased the 955XL cartridge, but unfortunately, the printer recognizes it as an incompatible cartridge and will not allow me to proceed with printing.
Upon further research, I discovered information suggesting that this might be due to a regional lock on the printer. I would greatly appreciate your assistance in disabling the regional lock or providing a way to make the 955XL cartridge usable with my HP 7740 printer.
Thank you for your support, and I look forward to your guidance.

Hi @jmjmjmjmjmjm,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
We understand that you're experiencing difficulty using the 955xl cartridge with your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 printer. Sometimes, this issue can be caused by regional restrictions built into HP printers. These printers are designed to work with cartridges that are specific to the region in which the device was first activated. If you’ve recently moved to a new country or region, the cartridges available locally may not be recognized by your printer. It’s a limitation that can feel confusing and inconvenient—we completely understand that.
To help you better, could you kindly share:
- 🌍 The country or region where you initially activated the printer.
- 📦 The country or region where you purchased the new 955xl cartridge.
- 🔢 (Optional) The printer’s serial number — feel free to send this privately for your privacy and security.
Once we have this information, we can check if a regionalisation reset is possible. This is a one-time process HP can assist with to align your printer to the region you're currently in.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
