HP Smart Tank 7005 All-in-One

IMG_2160.gif

My new HP 7005 smarttank printer worked fine for initial setup over wlan and even printed a few times.

After idling some time, i am not able to turn it off via button.

The display has the power button on, wlan (blue) on and cancel (red) on and is showing a "racetrack" animation permanently.

The box does connect to the wifi, as i see the box on the network and pingable, but smart app sais not found.

Any idea on how to fix this?
The box does not react on any key presses, so it can not be turned off.
Thus no factory reset possible, too.

after only 12 hours it seems the firmware update which was causing this finished.

pretty disappointing to see a update takes so long with no additional output on the web-page of the printer or any of the tools nor the display.

now im stuck with a different problem:

after printing one page (one sided or double sided), my iphone gives me a connection error and stops printing.

from then on, the printer is not fully reachable via hp smart app any more (shows no ink state, but does not show a connection error).

any ideas?

at the moment i spent so much time on the printer that i seriously think about just packing it up and leaving hp behind me forever as an it equipment suppier.

Hi @me566 ,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

I can imagine how frustrating it is to see your new printer become unresponsive, especially after it initially worked so smoothly.

Here are a few questions that might help narrow down the issue:

  1. Did anything change in your network setup after the initial printer setup?
  2. Have you noticed any firmware updates or notifications since setting up the printer?
  3. Are other devices also having trouble connecting to the printer, or is it only the HP Smart app?

To troubleshoot, try these steps:

Power Reset the Printer:

  • Disconnect the power cord from the printer while it’s still on, then unplug it from the power source. Wait for about 60 seconds, then reconnect it and turn the printer back on. This may help clear the "racetrack" animation and make the printer responsive again.

Verify Network Connection:

  • Check if your printer and device are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Since the printer is pingable, ensure it's still connected to the primary network and not a guest or secondary network.

Use a USB Connection (Temporary):

  • If the Wi-Fi connection is unstable, try connecting the printer via USB to your computer. This can help identify if the issue is network-related.

Reboot the Router:

  • Sometimes, a quick router restart can resolve connection issues. Reboot your router and see if the printer reconnects stably to the network afterward.

Check for Firmware Updates (if the printer becomes responsive):

  • Once the printer is reachable again, use the HP Smart app to check for firmware updates. Outdated firmware can sometimes cause connectivity issues.

If these steps don’t resolve the issue, further support may be needed to perform a more advanced reset.

I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instructions to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.

All your sugesstions were my initial failure analysis steps.

After some hazzle, i need to seperate my answer into 2 parts:

1) initial issues with printer busy

this initially happened during/after initial installation. for 12 hours, the printer was stuck in "printer busy" aka "racetrack 0 animation in display" status.

It was reachable via network but only the default webpage showed (nginx default page)

Even on opening the printer the printhead did not move to middle position.

USB connection did not find the printer (as expected).

After 12 hrs the box magically started working--> i assume some update was stuck/taking long or something similar happened.

---> my measure here is turn off automatic updates 🙂

2) issues with breaking airprint prints/printer unreachable message

after starting to print from my various i-devices (form iphones to ipads) the printer stopped with communication errors in the middle of printing, then was unreachable for all devices and took a printer restart and sometimes even a idevice full restart to rediscover the printer.

during these phases, the printer was always reachable via webinterface. printing from windows pc worked.

---> i fine-tuned some settings by

* disabling print anywhere

* disabling ipv6

and now the printer can print from idevices via hp smart software, at least up to now.

i do not wan to experiment further with which of the disabled options now caused it to work/fail, so as i dont need both i can live with this setup.

tbh i did not do prints with more than 5-10 pages for now, so as soon as i find a worthy printjob i will update this thread if the above settings also enable larger print jobs.

i would like to keep the thread open for some time if possible to give regular updates if the situation is stable.

regarding my setup:

6+ i device (ipads, iphones) with latest ios

4+ windows devices with latest windows 11

network:
avm network setup with 5690 pro and multiple avm repeater (lan mode) and zyxel switches for cabled connections

printer next to central avm box (1m distance) and secondary repeater (10m distance) so even on 5ghz radar detection it has 5ghz connectivity (and of course the box was pingable all the time during any of the issues. So i exclude network issues up to layer 3).
