I've cleaned the black print head and printed in black and white many times trying to stop streaking with no success. Note that printing in black and white is the only problem (color printing works). Do I need a new black and white print head?

"Hi @HelpMe_123,m,
Thanks for your response and I’m glad the earlier guidance was useful. To determine whether your HP printer’s print head may need replacement, here are few diagnostic steps you can take:
Run the Printer’s Built‑In Diagnostics: Most HP printers have a “Print Quality Diagnostic” or “Print Head Cleaning” option in the printer’s software or control panel. Running this test will produce a report showing if colors are missing, streaked, or misaligned.
Check for Persistent Print Quality Issues: If you see faded colors, streaks, or missing sections even after performing multiple cleaning cycles, that’s a strong indicator the print head may be worn out.
Inspect Error Messages: Some HP models will display specific error codes or messages related to the print head. If you see repeated “Printhead Problem” or “Replace Printhead” alerts, that’s a clear sign.
Rule Out Other Causes: Make sure ink cartridges are not empty or clogged, and that you’re using genuine HP supplies. Sometimes issues that look like print head failure are actually due to low ink or non‑HP cartridges.
Physical Signs: If you remove the print head (on models where it’s user‑replaceable) and notice visible damage, dried ink buildup that won’t clear, replacement is likely needed.

Hi @HelpMe_123,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out!
I understand how it must be to deal with streaking when printing in black and white, especially after already cleaning the print head multiple times. Thank you for sharing those details.
Could you please share the exact printer model you’re using?
In the meantime, here are a few things you can try:
- Run the “Print Quality Diagnostic” tool from your printer’s software or control panel. This often highlights whether the issue is with alignment, ink flow, or the print head itself.
- Check the ink cartridge: Make sure the black cartridge isn’t low or clogged. Sometimes replacing the cartridge itself (rather than the print head) resolves streaking.
- Perform an alignment: After cleaning, aligning the print head ensures ink is being distributed evenly.
- Use plain white paper: Glossy or textured paper can sometimes exaggerate streaks.
- Update printer firmware/drivers: Outdated software can occasionally cause print quality issues.
I hope this helps.

The printer model is HP Smart Tank 6001. The closest diagnostic I could find is the "Print Quality Diagnostic Page", but that doesn't tell me if there's a problem with the print head. Anyway, today when I tried your suggestions again the printing was good. Maybe the printer needed a break after cleaning. Thanks for the help!
