HP DeskJet 4158e All-in-One Printer

I have setup and used my HP 4100 printer for a couple months. I once replaced the color cartridge without problem. But after I tried replacing the black cartridge, now I'm stuck with the "please use SETUP cartridge" message, with the printer flashing E0 on its display and states cartridge is "protected".

What am I supposed to do?

Hi @Elizabeth377 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the issue with your HP DeskJet 4158e printer is related to the black ink cartridge being recognized as a "protected" or non-functional cartridge. Here are the steps to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

Check the Cartridge Compatibility:

  • Ensure the replacement black cartridge is compatible with your HP DeskJet 4158e printer. It's important to use genuine HP cartridges or authorized replacement cartridges.
  • Verify that the cartridge is the correct model (e.g., HP 67 or HP 67XL).

Check for Protective Tape:

  • If the new black cartridge is brand new, make sure that all the protective tape covering the cartridge’s electrical contacts has been removed. This tape is often used to protect the ink nozzles during shipping and needs to be fully removed.

Reseat the Cartridge:

  • Open the printer's cartridge access door.
  • Remove the black ink cartridge and then reinsert it properly, ensuring it clicks into place. Sometimes, a cartridge can appear to be installed but isn't fully seated, causing issues.

Reset the Printer:

  • With the printer powered on, disconnect the power cable from the back of the printer.
  • Wait for about 30 seconds, then reconnect the power cable.
  • Power the printer on again and check if the issue persists.

Use Setup Cartridges:

  • The printer might be requesting a "Setup" cartridge if the black cartridge isn't recognized as valid. Setup cartridges are usually provided with new printers and are pre-filled with ink.
  • If you have a setup cartridge from when you first purchased the printer, try inserting that cartridge in place of the current black cartridge to see if the error resolves.

Printer Firmware Update: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Sometimes, an outdated printer firmware can cause issues with cartridge recognition. You can check for updates via the HP Smart app or the printer’s web interface (if connected to the internet).

Try a Different Cartridge:

  • If the above steps don’t resolve the issue, try installing a different, known-good black ink cartridge (preferably an unused or sealed cartridge) to see if the problem is with the cartridge itself.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
