Hi @s0nyarae,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your printer is only printing in color and not using the black ink cartridge despite it being mostly full, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:
1. Check Default Print Settings
- Ensure that your printer settings are configured to print in black and white:
- Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Right-click your printer and select Printing Preferences.
- Look for a setting that specifies color or black & white printing and select black & white.
2. Check for Software Issues
- Make sure you are using the correct driver for your printer. Sometimes, incorrect or outdated drivers can cause printing issues. You can download the latest driver from the HP website.
3. Perform a Print Head Cleaning
- Even if you've run a cleaning cycle, try performing a more thorough print head cleaning:
- Use the HP Smart app or the printer's control panel to initiate a deep cleaning cycle.
4. Check Cartridge Installation
- Remove the black ink cartridge and reinstall it. Ensure it is seated properly and that there are no protective seals left on the cartridge.
5. Use the HP Printer Troubleshooter
- If you have a Windows computer, use the built-in HP Print and Scan Doctor. This tool can help diagnose and fix common printing issues.
6. Check Ink Levels
- Sometimes, the printer may misreport ink levels. Try printing a diagnostic page to see if it reports the correct ink levels.
7. Update Firmware
- Check for firmware updates for your printer via the HP website or the HP Smart app. Updating firmware can sometimes resolve printing issues.
8. Try a Different Document
- Test printing from different applications or document types. Sometimes the issue might be application-specific.
9. Reset the Printer
- Power off the printer, unplug it from the wall, and wait for about a minute before plugging it back in and turning it on again.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
