OfficeJet Pro X476dw
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hello -

I was just given an HP OfficeJet Pro X476dw.  The lady who gave it to me claimed it was brand new but I think she was on something - this printer was made in 2013 per the S/N check.  So much for that news.  It will power up, then proceeds to announce that an ink cartridge is missing.  Sho nuff - no cyan cartridge present!  It has the 970XL black cartridge and the 971XL yellow & magenta cartridges.  Lord only knows when the last time this unit was used.

Full stop on testing.

On the Software and Driver page I did see a download that is supposed to kill the internal check for non-HP ink cartridges.  My question now is will this printer accept ink cartridges that are EXPIRED??

Also, any other suggestions on trying to bring this beast back to life?

All help appreciated.  Thanks

Skidman (Fred)

Well, I am using expired ink cartridges in my HP OfficeJet Pro 8710, so I imagine your HP OfficeJet Pro X476dw printer should do so too. Obviously, the performance and quality of prints using an expired ink cartridge may not be ideal.

If you have an expired ink cartridge and want to use it, you can certainly try inserting it into your printer. The printer will likely detect the expiration date and may issue a warning or message, but it should still allow you to proceed with printing.

Just keep in mind that the print quality may not meet your expectations, and you may need to replace the expired cartridge -assuming your printer actually works, for better results.

If you have a critical print job or require high-quality prints, it's generally recommended to use a fresh, unexpired ink cartridge to ensure the best results.

Hope this was helpful.

Kind Regards,

The only caution I would extend is that older formulations of ink are prone to causing a problem called black ink fade, were the black pigment separates from the carrier fluid and settles and clogs the nozzles. Regular use of the printer will usually prevent this from happening, however if you do not print on a regular basis, this issue may pop up.
