RE: HP Office Jet Pro 6978. Over a year ago I subscribed to InstantInk in the hope of not running put and having to make mad dashes to Staples. it worked fine for awhile but sometime after 8/16/2023 HP stopped shipping cartridges though they continued to charge my card. Meanwhile my print volume was low during that period so I didnt notice for awhile. Upon running out of toners recently and being unable to talk with anyone at HP I bought replacements at Staples but have since learned they are not compatible when one has an Instant Ink subscription. My printer will simply not run from any computer that uses it, despite it having 4 brand new store bought cartridges in it. I have cancelled my HP InstantInk subscription and closed the account today (after final billing to occur on 3/25/23) Do I simply have to wait two weeks to get my printer back? Will it come back to life on its own once they free me from their serfdom?

That is exactly what it is. And I learned that if you relent and crawl back to Instant Ink, the existing "II" cartridges are no longer valid and you have to buy new ones. I found a better solution in a new Epson printer.

Hi @drrne,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd like to help!
And here's what you need to know & do:
If you have an instant ink cartridge on your printer, remove it and discard that, you can only use regular cartridges on your printer once you cancel the program.
That said, if you have trouble using regular cartridges, I recommend you turn off the web service using the steps from this link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04808536
when done successfully, check if it works fine.
Keep us posted,

I appreciate the effort but the steps did not work. The printer immediately goes back to its prior error messages.
HP was able to "capture" my printer when I enrolled and now its required that i g=figure out how to set myself free? I am very upset that I cannot print. I cancelled my Instant Ink account, have brand new cartridges and my printer says the cartridges are defective or empty and wont print. The right thing to do is for HP to work it backwards and let me go. At this point I will never buy an HPO product again. They didnt fulfill their end of the bargain with timely shipping of the cartridges during the contract and now refuse to let me go. I will have to buy a new printer today to end this ridiculous situation.
