Hi this is  new printer and had to replace black cartridge.  I print only in black so was surprised when I had to replace blue and red cartridges before printer would resume the job.  I have not printed in color once since I bought this machine in November.  What happened?  More importantly, how to prevent it from happening again the next time the black cartridge runs dry.  Thanks

Possibly, you have been using those HP setup cartridges that are needed on new printers.   It is possibly that when you replaced the black setup cartridge the printer cannot use any of the others and you need to start using the normal or regular HP ink.

 

Are you registered for instant ink?  If so, switching to regular ink for black might mean you can no longer use the color instant ink.  Just guessing as I do not have instant ink.
