We bought replacement cartridges from Office Depo and get a error HP Instant Ink Cartridge.
Cartridge cannot be used until printer is enrolled in HP Instant Ink.
This is not a instant ink cartridge. We bought a second set and verified they are not part of instant ink. I still get error, I did the swap inks and one color will not read properly.

Hi @JeffB1962, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 is stuck in Instant Ink mode, even though you're using standard replacement cartridges. Here are some troubleshooting steps to resolve this issue:
Check Cartridge Authenticity
- Since you've already verified they are not Instant Ink cartridges, ensure they are genuine HP cartridges. Compatible or refilled cartridges can sometimes trigger errors.
- The correct cartridge numbers for the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 are HP 952, 952XL, 956XL (Black).
Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer.
- Disconnect the power cable for 2-3 minutes.
- Reconnect the cable and turn the printer back on.
- Try inserting the cartridges again.
Hard Reset
- Unplug the printer while it is powered on.
- Hold the Power button for 30 seconds.
- Plug the printer back in and power it on.
- Check if the error is gone.
Check Printer Enrollment Status
Your printer may still think it is enrolled in HP Instant Ink.
- On the printer’s touchscreen, navigate to:
Setup > HP Instant Ink > Manage Subscription - If it says Enrolled, try logging into your HP Smart account and cancel any Instant Ink subscription.
Update Firmware
Outdated firmware can cause cartridge recognition issues.
- Download and install the latest firmware from the HP Support website.
- Restart the printer and try again.
Try a Semi-Full Reset (Last Resort)
If nothing else works, a semi-full reset will restore the printer to factory settings.
- Access Support Menu:
- Turn off the printer.
- Hold the Back arrow and OK button together.
- While holding, turn the printer back on.
- Release when the menu appears.
- Select Reset > Semi-Full Reset.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
