Hi @amedaglia

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for explaining the issue—I'm really sorry your HP OfficeJet Pro 8028e is showing that cartridge error. The message you're seeing typically means the printer cannot detect one or more cartridges, or it believes they’re damaged or incompatible

Let’s walk through a focused recovery process to clear the error and restore printing.

Step-by-Step Fix: “Cartridge Missing or Damaged” Error

1. Power Drain Reset

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from both the printer and wall outlet.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds (while unplugged).
  • Plug it back in and power on.

This clears residual charge and resets the cartridge detection system.

2. Inspect and Reseat All Cartridges

  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove all cartridges.
  • Check for:
    • Protective tape still attached (on new cartridges)
    • Ink residue or debris on copper contacts
    • Bent or missing contact pins
  • Gently clean the cartridge contacts with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Reinsert each cartridge firmly until it clicks.

Even a slightly misaligned cartridge can trigger this error.

3. Use Genuine HP Cartridges

  • Confirm that all cartridges are HP 912 or HP 912XL and genuine.
  • Third-party or refilled cartridges can cause detection failures.

HP printers often reject non-genuine cartridges, especially after firmware updates.

4. Update Printer Firmware

Firmware updates improve cartridge recognition and error handling.

5. Run HP Diagnose & Fix Tool

Let me know what happens after reseating the cartridges or if you see a specific color flagged—I’ll guide you further. You’re doing everything right by catching this early—I’ll stay with you until it’s resolved.
