Just unpacked my new printer and installed paper and setup cartridges no problem.  However, when I close door the message comes up “cartridge problem” and indicates a problem with the “K” (black) cartridge. It says “if problem persists replace cartridge”. All other colours seem fine.  Any ideas apart from getting hold of another cartridge, which I don’t have.  I want to test it’s all working, even with just other colours but can’t seem to go any further in setup until this has been resolved?

Hi @Calisha1

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand the concern and appreciate the effort you’ve already put into setting up the printer. Since the message points to the black cartridge, let’s go through recommended steps to address this:

Check Cartridge Placement

  • Open the cartridge access door and confirm the black cartridge is firmly seated in its slot. Remove it and reinstall to make sure the electrical contacts align properly.

Inspect Cartridge Contacts

  • Power off the printer and unplug it.
  • Remove the black cartridge and gently wipe the copper‑colored contacts with a lint‑free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Allow the cartridge to dry fully before reinstalling.

Reset the Printer

  • With the printer powered on, disconnect the power cord.
  • Wait 60 seconds, reconnect, and power on again.
  • Re‑add the printer in the HP App if prompted.

If the issue persists after these steps, the black cartridge may need replacement to proceed with setup.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
