When printing from linux apps with a print dialog, selecting duplex printing on long edge flips on short edge. The printer control panel web page only offers 1-Sided and 2-Sided as options for a default. It does not appear to matter which is selected. Nearly all my duplex printing requires flip on long edge.

Hi @DesertLion,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I'd be happy to help you.

I understand you are encountering an issue where your HP Color LaserJet Pro 3201 is consistently flipping on the short edge when printing duplex from Linux applications, despite your preference for a flip on the long edge. Here are some steps that might help resolve this:

Check Printer Driver Settings: Ensure that you are using the correct and updated HP printer drivers for Linux. The HP Linux Imaging and Printing (HPLIP) software is advisable for managing HP printers in Linux environments. You can download it from HP's official site.

Application Print Dialog: In the print dialog of the application you are using, ensure you select "Flip on Long Edge" under the duplex printing options. If these settings do not seem to apply, try configuring the print job through a different application to see if the behavior changes.

Printer Driver Configuration: Access the CUPS web interface (usually at http://localhost:631) to manage and adjust printer settings. Locate your printer, then set "Duplex" and choose "Flip on Long Edge" as the default printing option.

Update Firmware: Verify that your printer's firmware is up to date. Outdated firmware can sometimes cause discrepancies in printing operations. Check HP's support page with the exact model for available firmware updates.

Test with Another Document: Sometimes the issue might be document-specific. Test with a different document or application to see if the issue persists.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

1. Installing the HPLIP software was my first approach, prior to posting the question. The software will not install.

Universe and multiverse repositories are enabled. OS is Linux Mint 22.2, so the link reference to help.ubuntu.com is not particularly helpful. Missing dependencies: libtool cups-devel cups-image libnetsnmp-devel libcrypto python3-pyqt4

Attempted to install manually:

$ sudo apt install libtool cups-devel cups-image libnetsnmp-devel libcrypto python3-py

Package python3-pyqt4 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source

E: Unable to locate package cups-devel
E: Unable to locate package cups-image
E: Unable to locate package libnetsnmp-devel
E: Unable to locate package libcrypto
E: Package 'python3-pyqt4' has no installation candidate

2. Print driver settings are correct.

3. Application print dialog options are correct.

4. Print Driver cups web interface setting:

Defaults:

job-sheets=none, none media=na_letter_8.5x11in sides=two-sided-long-edge

5. Firmware is listed as up to date:

Firmware Version
6.28.1.35-202511201716
Last Check for Update
Dec 29, 2025, 12:51:14 PM
6. Have tested with several documents. Plain text from the text editor and test-only PDF are primary sources, both print with flip on short edge regardless of settings. I could live with the setting being reversed, but whether set to short or long edge, the document prints with short edge flip.

Hi @DesertLion,

Thank you for your response.

The issue you're experiencing with the HP Color LaserJet Pro 3201 and the HPLIP software installation on Linux Mint 22.2 is related to missing dependencies. Since Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu, some steps and repositories that apply to Ubuntu are also relevant.

Ensure You're Using Compatible Repositories: Make sure that your system repositories are set correctly. Run the following commands to update the package lists:

  1. sudo apt update sudo apt upgrade

Dependencies Availability: In Linux Mint 22.2, some of the dependencies for HPLIP might have different package names or versions. It seems like you're facing issues with the following:

  • libtool
  • libcups2-dev (instead of cups-devel)
  • libcupsimage2-dev (instead of cups-image)
  • libsnmp-dev (instead of libnetsnmp-devel)
  • libssl-dev (corresponds to libcrypto)
  • python3-pyqt5 (instead of python3-pyqt4)

HPLIP Automatic Installation: Try using the automatic installer provided by HP, which can handle dependencies:

  1. wget https://developers.hp.com/sites/default/files/hplip-3.23.5.run sh hplip-3.23.5.run

Follow the on-screen instructions closely, as it will guide you through the installation process interactively, including dependency handling.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

The missing modules were as listed from the automatic process using the file hplip-3.25.8.run. As the process suggested, I attempted installing those modules manually, unsuccessfully. When attempting the wget command listed, that also fails.

Hi @DesertLion,

Thank you for your response.

It appears that you're experiencing difficulty with duplex printing settings and the installation of the HPLIP software. Here are some steps you can follow to address these issues:

Duplex Printing Issue

For the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479, setting up for duplex printing where only short edge mode is used often requires checking the printer settings, both on the device and within your printing setup on your computer. Ensure that the duplex settings in the print dialog box are set to "Short Edge" if that's the mode desired.

HPLIP Installation Issue

When installing HPLIP (Hewlett-Packard Linux Imaging & Printing) and encountering problems:

Check Version Compatibility: Ensure that the version of HPLIP you are trying to install is compatible with your Linux distribution. Sometimes newer or older versions might be required.

Manual Dependency Installation: If the automatic process failed, try installing the required dependencies manually. The necessary packages often include libraries for printing, scanning, and network management.

Network Issues: If wget fails, there might be a network issue or a problem with the URL. Make sure that the network connection is stable and the URL is correct. Sometimes, updating the URL to the latest HPLIP file from the official HP developer website or mirrors might be necessary.

Use Alternative Download Methods: If wget continues to fail, you might consider downloading the file using a browser and then running the .run file manually from your downloads directory.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

First, it may not be relevant, but I am not using the Pro MFP M479. As noted in the subject, it's a Pro 3201. If the drivers are the same, that may not be the issue. Also, it prints all duplex in short edge mode. I need it to flip on the long edge.

The version of HPLIP is what the system provided as the correct one for Linux Mint 22.2. The installation file is hplip-3.25.8.run, unpacked from hplip-3.25.8.tar.gz  This file was downloaded and used for the initial installation before submitting the initial question. I also attempted to download again from https://developers.hp.com/sites/default/files/hplip-3.23.5.run, both using wget as instructed on Jan 18 and directly using that URL in a browser. Both failed, with the browser error Page not found. However, the file name indicates this would be the same version I have already downloaded from the support page and attempted to install. Again, I am using Linux Mint 22.2 - if this is not the correct version of HPLIP for that OS, please point me to the correct one which is not on a development system to which there is not public access available.

I have attempted manually installing the dependencies when the automatic process failed, but those modules where also not available manually.

I am not having network issues - all other connections, both on the LAN and to other Internet locations, work without any problems. When wget failed, I did try downloading the file using a browser, but the URL is not found.
