OfficeJet Pro 8020

 

The problem started when I replaced the ink cartriges. Black was running out, but I changed them all anyway. Genuine HP. It gave an error message saying black was either missing or damaged.

 

After messing with it I got it to go, so I went to print out some test sheets. I was getting black, but nothing in color was printing. Thought that was odd. Went through the settings and noticed that there was a firmware update available (had the printer since spring of ‘20 and it has never been updated), so I went ahead and installed it.

 

After reboot, a message popped up saying that the cartriges were not compatible as they weren’t genuine HP. Went and got all new ink. Still got the message. Backed out and decided to restore it to it’s default settings. After rebooting from that, I’m stuck on the same screen saying that this time only back is a non-HP chip.

 

Went and got yet another HP black ink cartrige and I’m still getting the same error. However, since restoring default settings, it’s not allowing me to back out of that screen. I can’t do anything with it. Am I supposed to just keep dropping $50+ a pop, hoping to maybe run into a black ink that works?

I am sorry to hear that your HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 printer became unresponsive after a firmware update, and you encountered an error after replacing ink cartridges with genuine HP products, try the following steps to resolve the issue:

 

Reset the Printer

  • Ensure the printer is on, then unplug the power cord from the printer and the power source.
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into a wall outlet and reconnect it to the printer.
  • Turn the printer back on, if it does not automatically power up.

Confirm Firmware Update

  • Make sure the firmware update was correctly installed and there were no interruptions during the update.
  • If possible, recheck for any available firmware updates.

Reinstall Ink Cartridges

  • Open the cartridge access door and ensure each cartridge is correctly seated.
  • Make sure no protective tape is left on the cartridges and that they are genuine HP products.
  • Close the cartridge access door and check for any error messages.

Perform a Hard Reset

  • Disconnect all cables from the printer, including the power cord.
  • Wait 5 minutes for a complete power cycle.
  • Reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer.
