@GilVie, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Officejet Pro 8600 printer isn't recognizing the new Magenta XL cartridge, even after replacing it with a genuine HP cartridge and recycling the power, here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:
Reset the Printer Memory
This is a common fix for cartridge recognition issues:
- Remove the new cartridge and reinsert the old one.
- Leave the printer idle for 10 minutes.
- Reinsert the new cartridge and check if it's recognized.
Power Cycle with Cartridge Removed
- Remove the new cartridge.
- Turn off the printer using the power button.
- Unplug the printer from the wall.
- Wait 10–15 minutes.
- Plug it back in, but don’t turn it on yet.
- Insert the new cartridge.
- Turn the printer back on.
Check for Protective Tape
Ensure the plastic protective strip on the new cartridge has been completely removed.
Clean the Cartridge Contacts
- Use a lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly moistened with distilled water.
- Gently clean the gold contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer.
Disable Cartridge Protection (if applicable)
HP printers sometimes block reused or third-party cartridges:
- On the printer screen, go to Setup > Preferences > Cartridge Protection.
- Disable this feature if it's turned on.
Use HP Smart App
- Open the HP Smart app on your PC or mobile.
- Navigate to Printer Settings > Cartridge Protection and disable it if needed
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
