HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 All-in-One Printer

Hi - I'm using the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 - have had it for years, and up until just before mid December 2025, it was fine.
I got an error message that the cyan ink cartridge was depleted, and the printer wouldn't work. The blue ink cartridge was not empty. I cleaned the sensors etc, and reinstalled, then had to purchase a new cyan cartridge. When installed, the printer accepted it and said it was fine.
Then it did the same thing with the yellow cartridge. And would not print when I replaced the not-yet-empty cartridge with a new one.
Now I'm getting the message that the black ink is a 'continuous ink' system, and that I have to install an original HP cartridge.  it IS an original HP cartridge!
I have uninstalled HP Smart and reinstalled it, and uninstalled and reinstalled the printer drivers on my pc, and am getting the same message about continuous ink system.

Can anyone recommend what to do next? Thanks!

Hi @FrankieB0115,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 is experiencing issues recognizing genuine ink cartridges, here are some steps you can try to resolve the problem:

Verify Cartridge Authenticity:

  • Ensure that the ink cartridges are genuine HP products. Non-HP or refilled cartridges might not be recognized properly by the printer.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Open the ink cartridge access door and carefully remove the cartridge.
  • Gently clean the copper contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water.
  • Allow the contacts to dry completely before reinserting the cartridge.

Reset the Printer:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds, then plug the power cord back into the wall and the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and check if the issue persists.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Make sure your printer’s firmware is up-to-date. Outdated firmware can sometimes cause recognition issues with cartridges. Visit HP's support site to download and install the latest firmware.

Check for Cartridge Errors:

  • Use the printer's control panel to navigate to the ink or cartridge settings and see if there are any specific error messages regarding the cartridges.

Try Another Cartridge:

  • If possible, try using another new cartridge to see if the issue is specific to the one you’re currently using.

Take care and have an amazing day!
