HP OfficeJet 3830 All-in-One Printer

My printer, Serial number [Personal Information Removed] is out of warranty. I purchased new cartridges in June. They worked. Now the printer gives me the message that the cartridges are not compatible. I have unplugged the printer, turned it off, taken the cartridges out and put back in, and put in an old cartridge that used to work, and I get the same message. Cartridges are so expensive, I'm hoping for some easy fix.

Are the cartridges HP or third party?  Was the firmware recently updated?

The troubleshooting steps in the document here may help resolve the issue.  I would suggest cleaning the cartridges' electrical contacts and those in the printer as described in the section for "All other ink cartridge errors":

Resolve errors or messages that can display with existing or newly installed ink cartridges

  • Cartridge not communicating correctly with printer

Check for tape and clean the cartridge if necessary

Check for protective tape and reinstall the cartridge, then clean the contacts on the cartridges and in the carriage if the error still appears.

  1. Open the door or lid to the cartridge access area. Wait until the carriage stops moving before continuing.

  2. Remove the cartridge indicated in the error message from the carriage.

  3. Holding the cartridge so that you touch plastic parts only, remove any protective tape that might be on the contacts.

CAUTION: Do not touch the ink nozzles or the copper-colored electrical strip with your fingers. These parts are fragile.
  4. Reinstall the cartridges and see if the error goes away.

  5. If the error still appears, remove the cartridges again for cleaning.

  6. Lightly dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water, and then wipe the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge.

  7. Lightly dampen a lint-free cloth or swab with distilled water, and then clean the electrical contacts in the carriage.

  8. Wait 10 minutes for the contacts to dry, and then reinsert the cartridge into its color-coded slot.

  9. Repeat these steps for the other cartridge if it was indicated in the error message.

  10. Close the door or lid to the cartridge access area.

If the error persists, clean the cartridge and carriage contacts a second time.
