My HP 8025e won't let me use generic cartridges, says "the indicated cartridges have been identified as altered or clone". I went into the settings menu, located "cartridge protection" and it was already off. I selected it again to make sure it was set in the off position then restarted the printer. That didn't work so I tried it again with the same results. I know that HP recommends the use of their cartridges but I should be able to use a different brand also. Please help

Hi @82560,
Welcome to the HP Support Community
I understand you are facing an ink cartridge issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8025e All-in-One Printer. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.
To assist better:
- Are you using genuine HP ink cartridges?
- Was there any recent update on the printer prior to the issue?
While you respond to that, Let's perform a power drain:
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Remove USB cable, if present.
- Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
- Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
- Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle
Update the printer firmware

If the issue persists, then please follow the steps mentioned in this document: HP Inkjet printers - Ink cartridge errors
If you are planning to use a NON-HP Ink: You may refill your cartridges or use remanufactured cartridges, but you may run into problems. HP will not guarantee the functionality of those ink cartridges.
There are many cartridges in the market which is refilled and sometimes the chip is not configured to work with the printer. You need to contact the cartridge manufacturer and find out why it's not working. Try a different cartridge supplier and check if that works.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Good morning and thank you for your reply.
As I mentioned in my original posting, I am trying to use non HP cartridges and when I do I get the printer onscreen message that the cartridge is a clone. I have read online about the cartridge protection section of the SW and went through the steps to disable it. When I got into that section "disable" was already selected, I decided to try restarting the printer but only had the same issue. How can the cartridge protection show to be disabled but still blocks me from using aftermarket cartridges? I checked to see if there was any updates available and the printer says the SW is current and up to date.
