Can someone from HP please tell us when HP will release an updated driver that will fix this fault? Come on - get on and provide the support that you're obliged to provide, as it's ridiculous that your product will not currently function as it should entirely because of a fault caused by your own driver update. Please forward this up the line to someone senior who can actually answer this, and update this thread to tell us what you're doing.
Perhaps we should just demand a complete refund and switch to an Epson or Canon printer instead?!

well, uninstalled the old drivers and followed instructions to load the newer ones, all reported somewhere on this forum (but not here? Why?). The only change I could detect from thew previous settings was a different printer driver code name 20-79-01-6594. This worked for one session but then reverted to greyscale only printing and a further unistall/reinstall males no doifference. The problem has cost me hours and hours of work and is obviously one of HP's recent making but they seem unable and unwilling to do anything about it. THIS IS A TOTAL DISGRACE AND INDIFFERENCE FROM WHAT USED TO BE A COMPANY I RESPECTED. LIKE FOLK ABOVE I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER HP PRODUCT. I am now resigned to having purchased a greyscale only printer and some useless 62 cartridges .... the 5540 is NOT a colour printer. Sales of Good Act anyone?

Hi @Saints_Fan,
Thanks for stopping by the HP community. A very good day to you. 🙂 I reviewed the post regarding issues with printing. I will be delighted to assist you here. 🙂
Superb description and stupendous diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂
First off, to assist you better, I would require more information regarding this:
- Did this happen after a power outage or surge?
- Did you try to make copies directly from the printer?
- Please provide the operating system of the computer to assist you correctly.
For now please perform a hard reset from this link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-envy-5540-all-in-one-printer-series/5447939/model/5447940/do... and perform only step 1.
- Then make copies directly from the printer if it has a copier also without any communication from the computer.
- If it fails to copy, then the printer has a hardware issue. Please contact HP tech support to replace the printer.
- Please follow all the prescribed steps from this link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-envy-5540-all-in-one-printer-series/5447939/model/5447940/do... to try and resolve the issue.
HP Technical Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: http://h22207.www2.hp.com/us-en/?openCLC=true
- Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.
- Next, choose the 'Contact Support' tab at the top and scroll down to the bottom of the 'HP Support- Contact' page to fill out the form provided with your contact information.
- Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.
- Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.
They will be happy to assist you immediately. If the unit is under warranty repair services is taken care of by the manufacturer’s warranty.
If it copies correctly then try these steps if the OS is windows:
- Uninstall the printer from "programs and features" which can be accessed by doing a right-click on the Windows button (Please have the printer Off and disconnected during uninstallation.)
- Check in device manager, if the printer is listed there, please delete it. (Right click on the Windows button to access device manager)
- Go to devices and printers, select any printer listed there and you will get some options on the top.
- Click on print server properties.
- You will get a popup, click on the drivers tab and delete all the HP printer drivers listed there if any.
- Delete all the instances of your printer listed in devices and printers.
- Restart the PC.
- Once the PC is on the desktop, press Win + R, it would bring a Run dialog box,
- Type %temp% in the run box and click Ok or hit the Enter button.
- It would bring up the temporary files folder. Delete the files in the folder (You might not be able to delete all the files).
- If possible, delete the printer from the registries using Regedit or using any other 3rd party application.
- Ignore the Regedit option if it cannot be done.
- Restart the PC again.
Then download the latest full feature driver from http://hp.com/drivers and install it on the computer after selecting the correct operating system.
Connect the printer to your computer only when the setup prompts for the printer.
Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient, please.
Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great.
To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.
Take care now and have a terrific week ahead. 🙂

I would like to confirm that I was having the same issue as everyone else here, and after following the instructions from DavidSMP starting at "If it copies correctly then try these steps if the OS is windows: " and I now have a working print driver, with colour capabilities.
Thank you DavidSMP for finally providing a solution that works

A big 'THANK YOU' to DavidSMP ! Finally a grown up comes along befitting of the title of Support Agent.
I have two of these printers and this issue has been driving me insane for months!
Appreciate your precise and successful solution.
Also, agree - Patience is the answer!

While the solution above (from DavidSMP, definitely not SandyTech) does work, it is interesting that about every 2-3 weeks my printer stops priting in color again and I have to pull these instructions out and do it all again. Any hope for a permanent fix to this problem?
As in... HP you need to fix your drivers!
