Hi @skostuke,
Good Day. Thank you for posting your query in the HP community. I read the post regarding issues with printing in color. I will be delighted to assist you here.
Superb description and commendable diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂
For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this:
- DId you make some copies in color and check if it copies correctly?
- Did you try to replace the ink cartridges and check if the issue gets resolved?
For now please make 1 copy in color directly from the printer without any intervention from the computer.
If it copies correctly, then please try these steps:
- In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
- Select your HP printer.
- Select Uninstall.
- In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
- In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
- Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
- Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
- Click on Drivers tab.
- Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click Remove at the bottom.
- Select OK.
- Remove all instances of the same.
- Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.
- Close Devices and Printers.
- Restart the PC again.
Then download the latest full feature driver from http://hp.care/2rIgkZ5 and install it on the computer after selecting the correct operating system.
Connect the printer to your computer only when the setup prompts for the printer. This should do the trick for you.
If it does not you could install the Windows Built-in drivers from this link: http://hp.care/2o3acvH and check if it gets fixed.
It is also recommended to check by replacing the cartridges to eliminate hardware issues.
Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient, Going by your technical expertise and competence I am sure you will be able to perform these steps without breaking a sweat. 🙂
Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes. To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.
Take care and have a blessed week ahead. 🙂
Cheers!

I would point out that if I print from either iPhone or MacBookPro, prints are always in colour! This, to me, suggests the Windows driver package is flawed.
I am at the end of my patience now with the lack of care from HP. Am looking now at replacing this machine for a Canon model that will actually perform the function I paid good money for.
Huge disappointment.

I think what's happening here is that there is an HP update that has a bug in it so a full printer reinstall works temporarily but then gets overwritten. I've tried everything and still no joy. I can print in colour from my mobile and the test page from the printer control panel but just not from my laptop. I've tried installing HP Deskjet F4200 drivers as suggested but it has now renamed my printer as HP Deskjet F4200 and I cannot print at all. Do HP monitor this forum at all?

Adding to this chain of woe. Our HP envy 5540 was working fine with old vista OS. Now using windows 10 and have lost colour functionality and also automatic double printing. I have followed instructions here and uninstalled and reinstalled twice with same issue. Yes i can use windows direct printing BUT then i have no scanner. I have spent 4 hours so far trying different drivers etc. i JUST wanted a solution so our HP 5540 works with windows 10 both printer and scaner. This is obviously a major issue for many and will get HP a very bad name.

Its a great shame - I found the 5546 to be a great machine but it would appear tha HP just don't give a $h1t about this problem. If they did, like any decent company who had taken your money for the product they are selling and actually cared about their customers, they would have rectified the issue and released a properly functioning Windows 10 driver (or whatever the real issue is) by now. Seems it is easier to just ignore the problem than address it.
At my wits end with their lack of action, I went out and bought a Canon Pixma IP7250. It doesn't have a scan function but, it DOES PRINT...... beautifully ...... IN COLOUR..........WITH WINDOWS 10...... EVERY...**bleep** .... TIME ! Simple.
