I am using an HP 65XL cartridge. I refilled it properly and carefully. I cannot make the low ink warning go away. I have done all the tricks I've read online-- unplugged it while it was on, restarted it 5 times, cleaned the cartridge head. This happened with another non HP black cartridge as well. I thought the refill didn't work then because it was an aftermarket cartridge. I have been able to refill and continue using the color cartridge with no problems.

I do not think that works. The cartridge circuitry just counts the number of times the ink is used and counts down to "empty". It has no idea how full or empty it really is.
Non HP ink can be used on this list of HP printers.
General ink cartridge help
The below type is unlikely to work.
To check if an HP ink cartridge is genuine, look for a security label on the cartridge, scan the QR code on the label with your phone, and then go to HP's website hp.com/go/ok to verify the serial number on the label; if the label appears tampered or the serial number doesn't validate, the cartridge is likely not genuine

I have used non HP inks with this printer before so I know they can work.
I am thinking now that it might work to refill the cartridges before they get to empty, but if you wait until they are empty, you can't reverse it. Is that right?

The fine print from the July 9, 2024 firmware release, quote:
Reminder: Dynamic security enabled printer. This Firmware includes dynamic security measures, which are used to block cartridges using a non-HP chip or modified or non-HP electronic circuitry. The printer is intended to work only with new or reused cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip or circuitry.
Check that cartridge for an expiration date, maybe that is the problem.

Just want to mention that this is just a user to user forum and I do not work for HP let alone have any influence on what they do. I have a CM1415 LJ printer and it accepts any type of toner. The really cheap ones leak ink and do not work as good as the genuine HP especially on any type of photo image.
