Microsoft Windows 11

Both ink cartridges are half full. After a successful print run, it now only prints in blue, green, and yellow.

Hi @Twerton ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP ENVY 5640 printer is having trouble with the black ink cartridge. Since it prints in blue, green, and yellow, the cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges are likely working, but the black cartridge might not be firing correctly. Here are some steps to troubleshoot:

Check the Black Ink Cartridge:

  • Ensure the black ink cartridge is correctly installed and seated.
  • Remove the cartridge and check for any protective tape or blockages on the printhead.

Perform a Printhead Cleaning:

  • Use the printer's built-in printhead cleaning function from the control panel or via the HP Smart app. This can help clear any clogs in the printhead that might be preventing black ink from printing.

Check for Ink Levels:

  • Double-check the ink levels for the black cartridge using the HP Smart app or your printer's control panel to ensure it's not low on ink, even though it's half full.

Print a Test Page:

  • Print a test page to confirm if the black ink is being used. If black areas are missing, it further suggests the issue is with the black cartridge or printhead.

Replace the Black Ink Cartridge:

  • If cleaning doesn’t work, try replacing the black ink cartridge with a new one to see if that resolves the issue.

Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers:

  • Sometimes outdated or corrupted drivers can affect printing. Try updating or reinstalling the printer drivers on your Windows 11 PC.

Let me know if any of these steps help or if you'd like further assistance!

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi. The problem was caused by a faulty colour cartridge, which is now replaced.  The black cartridge has also been replaced as a safeguard. All is now working fine.

Many thanks.
