HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One Printer

My HP Office Jet Pro 8720 is telling me that my HP 952 blue cartridge is empty, I replaced it with a new HP 952 blue cartridge and I am getting an error message that says "there is a problem with the supply system, try replacing the affected cartridge with a different, non-empty cartridge."  It is a new cartridge, why am I getting that message.  I tried cleaning the connections, which appear to be fine, but still getting that error message.  Can this be fixed?

Hi @MikeK56

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Yes, this issue can often be fixed. Here are some troubleshooting steps to try.

Check for Protective Tape

Make sure the new HP 952 blue cartridge has had all protective tape removed from the contacts and no part of the plastic covering remains.

Restart the Printer

  • Remove all ink cartridges.
  • Power off the printer and unplug it from the wall.
  • Wait about 2–3 minutes.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Reinsert the cartridges and check if the issue is resolved.

Try Another Cartridge

If possible, try a different blue (cyan) HP 952 cartridge to see if the issue is with the new cartridge itself.

Update Firmware

Outdated firmware can sometimes cause cartridge recognition issues. Try updating your printer firmware:

  • Go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer on your printer's control panel.
  • If an update is available, install it and restart the printer.

Clean Cartridge Contacts Again

Even though you already cleaned the connections, try again with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol. Dry the contacts before reinserting.

Perform a Hard Reset

  • Remove the ink cartridges.
  • Unplug the printer while it is on.
  • Wait 10–15 minutes.
  • Plug the printer back in, turn it on, and reinsert the cartridges.

Check for Third-Party Cartridge Restrictions

If your printer is enrolled in HP Instant Ink, it may not accept non-HP or refilled cartridges. Ensure you are using genuine, non-enrolled HP 952 cartridges.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
