I bought my printer from Costco over 3 years ago. I always bought my ink from Staples. I signed up for Instant Ink more than a year ago. I signed up for the lower tier which is now $1.91. I don't use the printer much, it is so much so that the monthly cartridges have accumulated. Now, there are 2-reasons for me cancelling  1. HP will stop your printer from printing. They will lock it up remotely. Nobody should have that kind of control over your asset. 2. A few days ago, I printed a document that is over 300 pages. HP charged me $8.31. When I ask 'why' they said that I exceeded my monthly quota. So you are not paying for Ink, you are paying for the usage of your printer. I have plenty of ink that I have paid for that I cannot use as I please because it will trigger a charge. Even now, after I canceled the subscription all those unused cartridges will not work.  I could have signed with 'Amazon Auto buy' and the cartridges would at least be mine.  Instant Ink is a good idea, but it cannot just be a money grab. I love my HP printer. It prints with great quality after so many years. HP is a great company, but Instant Ink needs improvement.

Hi @In6958,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I’m truly sorry to hear about your experience with the HP Instant Ink program. The program is designed to make printing more convenient and cost-effective by automatically managing your ink supply, but I completely understand your concerns.

I would like to clarify that HP Instant Ink charges are based on the number of pages you print each month, not on the amount of ink use. The cost is determined by the total number of pages printed under your selected subscription plan.

Additionally, while you are enrolled in the subscription, the ink cartridges are delivered to you at no extra cost for shipping. The service monitors your ink levels and automatically ships replacement cartridges before you run out, helping ensure uninterrupted printing.

Please also note that the cartridges provided through the subscription contain a special chip. This chip enables the cartridges to work with the HP Instant Ink service and track page usage accurately. These cartridges are intended for use only while your printer is actively enrolled in the subscription plan.
