Have an HP Office Jet Pro 8715. Am in the middle of a large print job and the printer told me to replace the black or restart the job in color. Have the second of two black 952XL F6U19A cartridges that came in the same package, and installed it.

The printer NOW says that this cartridge is for an older printer and it will not take it / work with it. It is identical to the cartridge it is replacing. They came from the SAME double-pack. What the HECK!

I then look online for a resolution and all of the "fixes" are secret on this site so I was forced to create a user account just to try and find out what the work around is. THIS IS STUPID! How the HECK do I get this printer to accept the valid cartridge?!?

Hi @thisis2stupid,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like you're experiencing an issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 printer after replacing the black ink cartridge in the middle of a print job. The error message "Cartridge Too Old" could indicate a few potential problems. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue.

  • Check Cartridge Compatibility: Ensure that the replacement black ink cartridge is compatible with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 model. Using an incorrect or incompatible cartridge can lead to error messages.
  • Reinstall the Cartridge: Turn off the printer, carefully remove the new black ink cartridge, and then reinsert it into the printer. Make sure it's properly seated and securely in place.
  • Reset the Printer: Sometimes, resetting the printer can help resolve cartridge-related errors. Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 60 seconds, and then plug it back in. Turn the printer on and check if the error persists.
  • Update Firmware: Outdated printer firmware can sometimes cause compatibility issues with new cartridges. Check the HP website for any available firmware updates for your printer model, and follow the instructions to update it.
  • Clean the Cartridge Contacts: Dust or debris on the cartridge contacts can interfere with communication between the cartridge and the printer. Carefully remove the cartridge and use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean the metal contacts on both the cartridge and the printer.
  • Check for Ink Leaks: Inspect the new cartridge for any signs of ink leaks or damage. If the cartridge is leaking, it could be triggering the error message.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Sorry but no that is not an acceptable solution. It was a perfectly good, workable, new cartridge that was part of a "two pack" bought at Sams. The first of the pair worked just fine. The second initially gave the errors above. I did a factory reset and the printer then complained that the cartridge was expired. In both cases it would not work. I resolved my issue by having to run out and purchase a new cartridge with an "in the future" expiry date and had to just throw the full cartridge away.

Thanks HP, another $60 waisted.

There should be a way to have the printer warn me but let me continue and that it does not do this tells me a lot about HP. I have seen other users comment on this same issue so it is not like HP does not know this nor that it is "in frequent".
