The printer was working fine and then it suddenly started saying that the system isn't designed to use continuous ink systems.  "Magenta"  This is an HP original cartridge.  How do you override this error?  I've even followed the directions found to override "non-HP" cartridges to see if this would work.  I've even tried to disable cartridge protection. Have powered on/off printer; unplugged from wall; disconnected wifi; removed and reinstalled cartridges.  Nothing works.  This is SO FRUSTRATING.  With all the problems with ink and HP, I certainly wouldn't recommend HP to anyone.

Cartridges are not empty and have not been changed.

Please share the fix.  I'm sure many folks would like to know.

Hi @klengyel ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP Office Jet Pro 8720 getting printer errors can be incredibly frustrating, especially when you've tried so many troubleshooting steps already. Let's try a few more things to see if we can resolve this issue:

May I know

1. Since when are you facing this issue

2. Have you made any changes on your printer post that this issue raised and have you observed any light blinking on the display

3, May I know if you are using genuine cartridges

  • Clean the Cartridge Contacts: Sometimes, the contacts on the cartridge or inside the printer can get dirty, causing communication issues. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Carefully remove the cartridges and clean the gold contacts on both the cartridges and inside the printer with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water. Allow them to dry completely before reinstalling the cartridges.
  • Update Firmware: Make sure your printer has the latest firmware installed. Sometimes, HP releases firmware updates that address compatibility issues with cartridges. You can check for updates through the printer's control panel menu or by visiting the HP support website and downloading the latest firmware for your specific printer model. Update the firmware on an HP printer
  • Reset the Printer: Try performing a factory reset on your printer to see if that resolves the issue. Be aware that this will reset all settings on your printer, so you may need to reconfigure it after the reset. Instructions for performing a factory reset should be available in your printer's user manual or on the HP support website.

I hope this helps.

Hello.  I have removed the cartridges and cleaned them.  Cleaned inside the printer also.  It still doesn't work.  It is an HP 952XL Magenta cartridge.  I've powered the computer off / on. I've updated the Firmware.  I did not factory reset my computer.  I installed a generic Magenta cartridge and the printer now works.

This is still very frustrating as HP ink is expensive and the Magenta cartridge is basically full.  Since the printer is now working with "generic" ink, I guess I'll just carry on.

Suggestion to HP:  Send out some "Firmware" that would allow the printer to work with any 1 of the 4 ink cartridges installed.  When you have an extra large black ink cartridge and can't print B&W because the pink doesn't work, it doesn't make a lot of sense.

Although your suggestions didn't fix the issue, I'll Accept the Solution so others can find. it.   Thanks.
