Hi @JohnHale29 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 not printing even after replacing the black ink cartridge, you can try the following troubleshooting steps:

Check Cartridge Installation:

  • Ensure the new black ink cartridge is installed correctly. Remove and reseat it, making sure it clicks into place.

Check Ink Levels:

  • Open the printer's control panel and check the ink levels to confirm that the black cartridge is recognized and has ink.

Run Printer Diagnostics:

  • Use the printer's built-in diagnostic tool to check for any issues. You can usually find this in the settings menu on the printer's display.

Clean Printhead:

  • Use the printer’s maintenance option to clean the printhead. This can often resolve issues related to blocked nozzles. You can do this via the printer’s menu or the HP Smart app on your computer.

Print a Test Page:

  • Try printing a test page to see if any ink comes out. This can help determine if the issue is with the black cartridge specifically.

Update Printer Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Make sure your printer firmware is up to date. You can check for updates using the HP Smart app or the printer's menu.

Check for Software Issues:

  • Ensure that you have the latest drivers installed for your printer. You can download the latest drivers from the HP website.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for about 60 seconds before plugging it back in and turning it on.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
