My HP printer suddenly stopped accepting even genuine HP cartridges and keeps showing the error:

“There is a problem with the supply system. Try replacing affected cartridge with a different.”  The strange part is that the “replacement” cartridge I inserted is a real HP cartridge.

Before this happened, I had tried using a non-HP cartridge. When the error started, I replaced it with an authentic HP cartridge, but the printer still refuses to recognize it. I also tried reinstalling the previous cartridge and swapping them around, but nothing worked.

At this point, I’d like to revert back to using only genuine HP cartridges, but the printer still behaves as if there’s a cartridge or supply system issue. I’m starting to suspect this may be related to a firmware update or some kind of cartridge lockout.

How can I reset the printer, roll back firmware, clear the cartridge memory, or otherwise get genuine HP cartridges working again?

Hi @cecev,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand how this must feel especially when you’re trying to use genuine HP cartridges and the printer still refuses to recognize them.

Could you please share your printer’s exact model number

Here are a few  steps you can try :

  1. Power reset: Turn off the printer, unplug the power cord from both the printer and the wall outlet, wait at least 60 seconds, then reconnect and power it back on. This clears temporary memory.
  2. Clean cartridge contacts: Remove the cartridges and gently wipe the copper-colored contacts with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water. Let them dry before reinserting.
  3. Update firmware:  Check HP’s support website https://support.hp.com/  for your model to see if a rollback option is available, if not try reinstalling  the latest version by uninstalling the previous version .
  4. Reset printer settings: On many models, you can restore factory defaults from the printer’s control panel. This can clear any supply system errors.

I hope this helps.

I have already tried 1 and 2.

3 and 4 - I was able to reset to factory settings, and the printer recognized the hp cartridges, then it went through maintenance check and reverted back to the same supply system error.

At this point, i have spent lots of time going through your support help and they failed big time.  Unless you can direct me to find the right firmware, the printer is going into the trash bins.

Hi @cecev,

Thanks for your response, Since you’ve already tried resetting and the issue reappears after the maintenance cycle, the next step would be to ensure your printer is running the latest firmware.

To provide you with the exact link for the latest firmware, I’ll need your printer’s model number.

Once I have the model, I can direct you to the correct HP support page download link  where you can download and install the latest firmware. This ensures compatibility with authentic HP cartridges and often resolves supply system errors.

Alternatively you could also check through below steps :

Check current firmware: On the printer’s control panel, navigate to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer.
