Hi @mspat4,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your HP OfficeJet Pro 8028 All-in-One Printer is not printing black ink after you’ve replaced the cartridge,
here are several steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
1. Verify Cartridge Authenticity
- Ensure the black ink cartridge is a genuine HP cartridge. Non-genuine or refilled cartridges can sometimes cause printing issues.
2. Check for Proper Cartridge Installation
- Remove the black ink cartridge and reinstall it, making sure it’s properly seated. You should hear a click when the cartridge is fully in place.
3. Clean the Printhead
- Using Printer Settings:
- On the printer’s control panel, go to Settings > Tools > Clean Printhead.
- The printer will attempt to clean the printhead, which may improve black ink flow.
- Manual Cleaning:
- If the automatic printhead cleaning does not work, you may need to remove the printhead and clean it manually with a lint-free cloth and distilled water.
4. Align the Printer
- After cleaning the printhead, align the printer:
- Go to Settings > Tools > Align Printer.
- The alignment process helps ensure the print quality is optimized.
5. Check for Printer Updates
- Ensure the printer's firmware is up to date. Outdated firmware may cause issues with ink cartridges:
- Go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer to check for any available updates.
6. Run a Diagnostic Report
- Print a Quality Diagnostic Report from the printer’s Tools menu. If the black section is missing or faded, it indicates a problem with the printhead or ink flow.
7. Reset the Printer
- Try resetting the printer by turning it off and unplugging it from the power source for at least 60 seconds. Then plug it back in and turn it on again.
8. Use the Printer Utility Software
- On your computer, open the HP printer software (HP Smart or HP Print and Scan Doctor). These tools can help identify and fix issues related to ink and printing problems.
9. Inspect for Clogs or Damage
- Check the printhead for any visible clogs or dried ink. Clean any debris gently with a lint-free cloth.
10. Replace the Printhead (If Necessary)
- If none of the above steps work, the issue could be with the printhead itself. You may need to replace the printhead.

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
