HP Photosmart 7520 - Won't recognize generic ink cartridges .... persistent "defective or missing cartridge" error message.
I have used generic cartridges for years but now it won't accept replacement generic color cartridges .... multiple ones tried. HP Cartridge Protection setting has been disabled. Attempts to reset by disconnecting not successful.
What else can be done??

Hi @joantw,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
When dealing with a persistent "defective or missing cartridge" error on your HP Photosmart 7520, even after trying multiple generic cartridges and disabling HP Cartridge Protection, here are some steps you can take to possibly resolve the issue:
Clean the Contacts:
- Remove the cartridge from the printer.
- Use a clean, lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol to gently wipe the gold-colored contacts on the cartridge and the contacts within the cartridge slot in the printer. This can help improve the connection.
- Allow the contacts to dry completely before reinserting the cartridges.
Reset the Printer:
- You've mentioned trying a reset by disconnecting, but ensure to follow this specific sequence:
- Remove the cartridges.
- Turn off the printer.
- Unplug it from the power source for at least 1 minute.
- Reconnect the printer to power and turn it on.
- Reinsert the cartridges.
Update or Downgrade Firmware:
- Sometimes, firmware updates are designed to block the use of non-OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) cartridges. If you suspect this might be the case:
- Check if a newer firmware version is available that might not have this restriction or might fix a bug causing the issue.
- Consider downgrading the firmware to a previous version if recent updates have caused the problem. This can be tricky and risky, so it should be done carefully and as a last resort.
Check for Specific Error Codes or Messages:
- Look for any specific error codes on the printer's display or manual that might give more information about the problem.
Try Different Brand of Generic Cartridges:
- Not all generic cartridges are created equal. Some might be more compatible with your printer model than others. Trying a different brand might yield better results.
Printer Hard Reset:
- Different from just unplugging the printer, a hard reset might involve more specific steps like holding down certain buttons while powering on the printer. Refer to your printer's user manual for instructions on performing a hard reset, if available.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
