Hp ink cartridges

I have a hp printer that uses the trio color and black ink when the black ink runs out first I have to go and buy another duo set of ink cartridges both colored and black I’m wasting Money because I never use up the color ink at all can I just replace the black ink  my daughter says I have to replace both

You only replace the one that is empty, if you are not using a color ink cartridge there is no need for a replacement.
