HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer

I have just installed a new genuine hp 902xl black cartridge bought at Costco in 2 pack and am now getting the older generation cartridge error.

This rendering my printer completely inoperable. I just also purchased and installed a new set of color cartridges which can't get any use out of.

I understand this is due to a firmware "upgrade" automatically installed on my printer.

Is there a solution?

Hi @Billrm,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you have installed a new genuine HP black ink cartridge in your HP 6978 printer and are receiving an error message indicating that the cartridge is an older generation, there are a few steps you can take to try and resolve the issue.

  • Restart your printer: Sometimes, a simple restart can fix many issues, including this one. Turn off your printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a minute, and then plug it back in and turn it on again.
  • Clean the cartridge contacts: The error message may be caused by dirty or damaged cartridge contacts. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to gently clean the contacts on both the cartridge and the printer.
  • Check for firmware updates: Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware updates. Go to the HP Support website and download any available firmware updates for your printer model.

It's important to note that using non-genuine HP cartridges or refilled cartridges may cause compatibility issues and could lead to error messages. It's always recommended to use genuine HP cartridges to avoid any such issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
