I have an HP office jet, Pro, 6975. It’s been a great printer and I would like to keep using it. But I accidentally took out a brand, new ink cartridge, and when I realized it. I put it back in, but it keeps saying that it is a used cartridge even though it is brand new. Is there a way to work around that or do I have to really buy a brand new ink cartridge?

Hi @Rhonda1025,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Great question! The HP OfficeJet Pro 6975 uses cartridges with built-in chips that track usage. When you remove and reinsert a cartridge, the printer may think it’s “used” because the chip is already registered as installed.

What You Can Try Before Buying a New Cartridge

1. Clean the Cartridge Contacts

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Remove the black cartridge.
  • Gently wipe the gold contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Let it dry and reinsert.

2. Reset the Printer

  • With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the back.
  • Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Check if the error clears.

3. Disable Cartridge Protection (If Enabled)

  • On the printer’s touchscreen:
Setup > Printer Maintenance > Cartridge Protection > Off.
  • Or log in to the Embedded Web Server (EWS) using the printer’s IP address in a browser.}

4. Update Firmware

Download the latest firmware from HP:

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
