I replaced my black ink cartridge in my HP tango printer with a new 64XL cartridge, and I am getting a "cartridge problem error." I noticed when I put the old cartridge back in there is no "cartridge problem error." The old cartridge is not an XL and is just 64 even though both are the exact same size!!! Could it be that the 64XL is causing the issue when it is supposed to be compatible to my HP tango printer?

Hi @PURSURER,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
It's frustrating when a new ink cartridge doesn't work as expected. For your HP Tango printer, a "cartridge problem error" when using a new 64XL cartridge could stem from several factors. Here are some troubleshooting steps to help resolve the issue:
Check Cartridge Compatibility:
- Ensure that the 64XL cartridge is indeed compatible with the HP Tango model. According to HP specifications, both the 64 and 64XL cartridges should be compatible, so this might not be the issue.
Reinstall the Cartridge:
- Turn off the printer and remove the 64XL cartridge. Reinsert it, making sure it's properly seated in its slot. Often, a misalignment can cause error messages.
Clean Cartridge Contacts:
- Dust or debris on the cartridge or in the printer can lead to connection issues. Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water to gently clean the copper contacts on the cartridge.
Update Printer Firmware:
- Ensure that your printer's firmware is up-to-date https://support.hp.com/us-en. Sometimes, a firmware update can resolve compatibility issues with new cartridges.
Reset the Printer:
- Turn off your printer and unplug it from the power source for a minute or so. Plug it back in and restart to see if the issue resolves.
Test with Another Cartridge:
- If possible, try using another 64XL cartridge to rule out a defect with the current cartridge.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
