It doesn't make sense, and it's against the law. The seller who sold you the product must take the defective product back solve it with the manufacturer and provide the customer new product or refund.
You need to claim your product to the retailer, not the manufacturer. If you buy milk and it's bad then you go to the seller for a refund/replacement, not to the milk company.
