I understand you want to disable cartridge protection on your HP OfficeJet 8710 printer. Let’s go through the steps.
Access the Printer Control Panel
○ On your 8710, go to the touchscreen or front panel menu.
Navigate to Cartridge Protection Settings
○ Tap Setup (gear icon) → Printer Maintenance or Printer Preferences → Cartridge Settings.
○ Look for Cartridge Protection in the menu.
Disable Cartridge Protection
○ Select Cartridge Protection and choose Off.
○ Confirm the change. This allows you to use cartridges on other printers if needed.
Restart the Printer
○ Power off the printer for 10 seconds and turn it back on to ensure the setting is applied.
I hope this helps.

Kuroi,
It turns out that the problem occurred because my replacement ink cartridges did not contain an HP "chip" in them. With this in mind, one would think that I could simply disable cartridge protection and the non-HP cartridges would work. Not the case> I disabled the cartridge protection from my HP dashboard and that still did not enable my use of the non-HP cartridges that I bought a while ago. Recently, I received a message on my printer's touchscreen, saying that an update had been installed. Immediately after that is when my printer started to refuse the non-HP cartridges that were installed and working. Is it possible that the update I mentioned contained an update to the printer's firmware that made HP chips mandatory across all cartridge manufacturers? I don't know. But HP has no right to mandate what I do with a printer that I OWN. If I wanted to turn the printer into a doorstop, a footstool, a terrarium or any other thing that I wanted to do with the product, that's MY CHOICE ALONE. HP's description of why the protection exists is a lame one, saying it's to prevent POSSIBLE damage from non-HP products. If my choices damage my printer, that's clearly on me. But for HP to have, possibly, installed cartridge protection on MY printer, without MY express agreement, and without MY approval sours me on ever buying another HP printer ever again.
Kuroi, your efforts to help me are much appreciated. Unfortunately, your solution did not work because I can't access cartridge protection from the printer's touchscreen and, therefore, I cannot click to accept the solution as having worked. Nonetheless, I do sincerely appreciate that you made the effort to assist me. So, thank you very much for your efforts.

Hi @billybob0603,
Thank you for your detailed explanation and for sharing your experience. I completely understand your frustration, especially after your printer worked with the non-HP cartridges previously, and now a firmware update seems to have restricted their use.
You are correct: recent HP firmware updates on certain OfficeJet models, including the 8710, have enforced cartridge authentication at a hardware level. This means that even if Cartridge Protection is disabled, the printer may require cartridges with valid HP chips to function. Unfortunately, this is controlled at the firmware level, so the touch screen may not provide access to toggle it if the firmware now enforces it.
Here are the steps you can take next:
1. Check Firmware Version and Settings
Print a printer configuration page from your 8710.
Check the current firmware version. If it was recently updated, it may include the enforcement changes.
2. Use HP-Approved Cartridges
If firmware rollback is not possible, the printer will only accept HP cartridges with valid chips.
I know this isn’t the answer you were hoping for, and I truly understand how frustrating it is when a product you own no longer behaves as expected. I really appreciate your patience and the detailed information you’ve shared, it’s incredibly helpful.
I hope this helps.

I can't mark this as an accepted solution because I'm unable to execute the steps that you outlined as the fix. My printer control panel does not offer the option to disable cartridge protection. Therefore, I cannot disable cartridge protection because I just can't see it.

Hi @billybob0603,
Thank you for the response.
I understand your HP OfficeJet 8710 is no longer allowing you to disable cartridge protection, and non-HP cartridges that previously worked are now blocked. Let’s clarify the situation and outline what can be done.
Recent Firmware Changes
HP released firmware updates for certain OfficeJet models, including the 8710, that enforce cartridge authentication at a hardware level.
Even if you previously disabled cartridge protection or tried to access the setting, the option may no longer appear on the touchscreen if the firmware now requires only HP-certified cartridges.
Why Cartridge Protection May Be Hidden
The menu option to turn off cartridge protection is only visible if the firmware allows it.
After updates, the printer may automatically hide or lock this option, preventing use of non-HP cartridges regardless of prior settings.
Firmware Version Check
Print a Printer Configuration Page from your 8710.
Check the Firmware Version. If it was recently updated, this is likely when cartridge authentication enforcement was applied.
Current Limitations
With the enforced firmware, non-HP cartridges without valid chips will no longer work, even if you previously used them successfully.
There is currently no official method to rollback firmware on HP OfficeJet 8710 to restore access to cartridge protection.
I hope this helps.
