My 5524 printer stopped printing black ink. I bought a new pack of HP364 (4 pack) and the colours are working well but not the black. However, when I print a 'print quality diagnostic' the printing is very good as far as the black is concerned but the colour block has a black surround but it is not filled. The other colours are OK.

Thank you for trying to help. Unfortunately I have gone through all the tips and I still cannot print a normal page of writing from any of my files. I have checked and found that I cannot take out the printhead to clean it or them. It just seems crazy that I am able to print a 'PRINT QUALITY DIAGNOSTIC' sheet and all of the writing is perfect such as 'check media and settings' etc. The cyan, Magenta and Yellow colour blocks are perfect but the BLACK one is blank apart from the black edge. How is it that black ink can be released to print on the DIAGNOSTIC page but not on a normal printed document or copy. If the black print head was defective surely I would not get any printed information on the DIAGNOSTIC sheet!!

Since the Black box is not getting filled in the Diagnostic report this could be a possible Printhead problem
You do not have to remove the printhead to clean
Since the Black box is not getting filled during the Diagnostic Test, this indicates a possible printhead issue.
You do not have to remove the Printhead to clean it
If you found defects on the Print Quality Diagnostic report, run an automated tool to clean the printhead.
-
Make sure that plain white U.S. letter or A4 size paper is loaded in the tray.
-
From the control panel home screen, touch the Settings icon
, and then touch Tools.
-
Touch the Down Arrow
, and then touch Clean Printhead. The printer cleans the printheads, and then prints a test page.
-
Review the print quality on the test page.
-
If the print quality on the test page is satisfactory, return to the current print job.
-
If the print quality on the test page is unsatisfactory, perform a secondary cleaning of the printhead.
If the printhead is badly clogged, it might require another cleaning cycle. If so, wait 30 minutes after the last cleaning stage to start the first stage of the cleaning process over again.
