I originally had an error saying that the print heads were jammed or misaligned or something and the printer didn't print or even attempt to print at all. Then the printer told me my black ink cartridge needed to be replaced. So I replaced the black ink cartridge and now the print prints in color, but not black and white. The black ink isn't working. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Hi @JeanValjean77,

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Check Cartridge Installation

  1. Check the Black Ink Cartridge:
    • Ensure that the new black ink cartridge is correctly installed and the protective tape is removed. Verify it’s seated properly in its slot.

Clean Printhead and Contacts

  1. Clean the Printhead:
    • Sometimes, ink residue or debris can cause issues. Turn off the printer and clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge with a lint-free cloth.
    • For more thorough cleaning, use the printer’s internal cleaning functionality:
      • Open the HP Smart app or the printer software from your computer.
      • Go to Printer Maintenance and select Clean Printhead.

Align Printhead

  1. Align the Printhead:
    • Make sure the printheads are aligned correctly to avoid printing issues. You can initiate an automatic alignment from the printer software:
      • Go to Printer Maintenance > Align Printheads within the HP Smart app or printer software.

Print Diagnostic Page

  1. Print a Diagnostics Page:
    • This can help identify whether the printhead or cartridges are functioning properly:
      • Access the printer settings through HP Smart app or printer software.
      • Click on Print Quality Diagnostic Report or Print Diagnostic Information.
