Hi @AP529,
Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
Check Ink Cartridge Compatibility
- Make sure that the Staples ink cartridges you're using are compatible with your HP Officejet Pro 8600. Sometimes third-party cartridges may not always work properly with certain printer models. Verify that the cartridges are labeled as compatible with the HP 8600.
Check for Ink Cartridge Installation
- Open the printer’s ink cartridge door and make sure all cartridges are properly installed.
- Remove and reinsert each cartridge to ensure they are seated correctly.
- Confirm that the cartridges are not damaged or leaking, and that the protective tape has been removed from the cartridges.
Check for Printer Error Messages
- Look at the printer display panel for any error messages or warning lights that might indicate an issue.
- If you see any specific errors, follow the on-screen instructions or consult the printer’s manual for resolution.
Reset Printer
- Power off the printer and unplug it from the wall for about 30 seconds.
- Plug it back in and power on the printer to reset it. This can often clear minor issues and improve communication with the cartridges.
Update Printer Firmware
- Outdated firmware can cause compatibility issues with third-party ink cartridges.
- Ensure your printer firmware is up to date. To do this:
- Open the printer software on your computer (HP Printer Assistant or HP Smart).
- Go to Printer Maintenance and check for firmware updates.
- Alternatively, you can visit HP's website and download the latest firmware version for your printer model.
Run Printer Diagnostics
- Use the built-in diagnostics tools to check for any issues with the printer.
- On the printer’s control panel, navigate to Setup > Tools > Printer Maintenance and select Print Quality Diagnostic Report.
- This report will help identify any issues with the cartridges or print heads.

Clean the Print Head
- If there is no print quality or no color printing, the printhead may need cleaning.
- From the printer’s control panel: Setup > Tools > Clean Printhead.
- Follow the instructions to clean the print head, which will clear any blockages and improve print quality.
Check Printer Settings
- Sometimes the printer may not be set to the correct paper or print mode for the cartridges being used.
- Go to the printer's settings through the HP Printer Assistant on your computer and check that your default settings are appropriate (e.g., paper type, print quality).
Check Printer Connections
- Ensure that the printer is properly connected to your computer or network.
- If using a wireless connection, verify the printer is connected to the correct Wi-Fi network.
- If using a USB connection, ensure the cable is securely plugged into both the printer and the computer.
Try a Test Print
- After completing the steps above, try printing a test page to see if the issue persists.
- If the test print works but regular prints don’t, there may be a software issue on the computer.
- If the test print doesn't work, the issue may be with the ink cartridges or the printer hardware itself.
Consider Using HP Cartridges
- HP printers are often optimized for HP cartridges, and third-party cartridges like those from Staples may cause issues with printing quality or recognition.
- If you've tried all of the above and the printer still won't work with Staples ink cartridges, consider trying genuine HP ink cartridges to see if that resolves the issue.
I hope these steps help resolve the issue
