I want to print all of my documents from the printer in BLACK AND WHITE ONLY...can I do this without having the color cartridges in the printer?

Hi @kristin43,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The HP Officejet Pro 9018e All-In-One Printer, like many other inkjet printers, typically requires all cartridges (including color ones) to be installed and have some ink in them for the printer to function, even if you only want to print in black and white. This is due to the design of the printer, which relies on all cartridges being present to avoid potential damage to the printhead and to ensure proper operation.
However, you can set your printer to print in black and white only, which will primarily use the black ink cartridge. Here’s how you can do this.
Setting Printer to Print in Black and White (Grayscale)
Windows:
- Go to Control Panel and select Devices and Printers.
- Right-click on your HP OfficeJet Pro 9018e and select Printing Preferences.
- Go to the Paper/Quality tab.
- Select Black & White or Grayscale from the color options.
- Click Apply and then OK.
Mac:
- Open the document you want to print and go to File > Print.
- In the print dialog, select Show Details.
- In the expanded print settings, select Color Options or Quality & Media.
- Choose Black & White or Grayscale.
- Click Print.
Ensuring Continuous Operation Without Color Cartridges
While the steps above will help you print in black and white, your printer will still need the color cartridges to be installed and to have some ink. If any of the color cartridges are missing or completely empty, the printer may not function properly.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
