Welcome to HP Support Community, @rmcm2
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP OfficeJet 4630 is showing an Incompatible Ink Cartridge message even after you replaced the cartridges, follow these steps to diagnose and resolve the issue.
1. Make Sure You Are Using the Correct Cartridges
The HP OfficeJet 4630 series typically uses:
HP 61 Black
HP 61 Tri-Color
(Or HP 61XL high-yield versions)
If you are using refilled, remanufactured, or third-party cartridges, the printer may not recognize them.
2. Remove and Reinsert the Cartridges
Turn on the printer.
Open the cartridge access door.
Wait for the carriage to stop moving.
Remove each cartridge.
Reinsert them firmly into the correct slots.
Close the access door and check if the error clears.
3. Check for Firmware Updates
New firmware ensures compatibility with the latest cartridge chips.
Go to the HP Software and Driver Downloads page for HP OfficeJet 4630.
Download and install any Firmware Update Utility available.
Restart the printer after the update.
4. Clean the Cartridge and Printer Contacts
Dirty or oxidized contacts cause reading issues.
Turn off and unplug the printer.
Remove both cartridges.
Use a lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly dampened with distilled water.
Gently clean the gold-colored contacts on:
The cartridge
The printer’s carriage
Let everything dry for 5 minutes.
Reinsert the cartridges and turn the printer on.
5. Restart / Reset the Printer
A simple reset can clear detection errors.
Turn off the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait 60 seconds.
Plug it back in and power on the printer.
6. Check for Defective or Wrongly Programmed Cartridges
If you bought new cartridges but they still show “incompatible”:
One of the cartridges may have a faulty chip.
HP may have locked the firmware from reading third-party cartridge chips.
Try the old cartridge:
If it works, the new one is faulty.
Try another new cartridge from a different seller.
7. Reset the Cartridge Chip (If Using Third-Party or Refilled Cartridges)
Some refilled cartridges need a chip reset.
If the seller provided a chip reset tool or replacement chip, try installing it.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
