My printer doesn't print when ink is half full. It's been this way since I bought my printer. Any way to rectify this? I should be able to use a full cartridge not half.

Hi, @Desb42

Thank you for responding.

I am sorry to hear that the issue is not fixed. I would request you to please follow the below steps which should resolve the issue.

Run Printer Self-Test

  • On most HP printers, press and hold the Cancel + Wireless buttons (or check your model’s button combo) to print a self-test/configuration page.
  • If the self-test also cuts off halfway, the issue is hardware/firmware, not the laptop or driver.

Print Spooler Reset

  • Run services.msc.
  • Restart the Print Spooler service.
  • Corrupted spooler jobs can stop mid-page.

Align the Printheads:

  • If your printer provides an option to align the printheads.
  • Perform this task to ensure optimal printing quality.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi @Desb42,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I am sorry to hear that your printer does not print when the ink cartridge is half full, it may be due to a cartridge detection or other printing issues. Here are some steps you can take to attempt to rectify this problem:

Verify Cartridge Installation:

  • Ensure that the ink cartridges are properly installed in the printer.
  • Sometimes, cartridges not seated properly can cause the printer to misread the ink levels.

Update Printer Firmware and Software:

  • Check for any available updates for your printer's firmware and software.
  • These updates can sometimes resolve known issues with ink level detection.

Reboot the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a minute, and then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • This simple step can sometimes resolve minor glitches.

Check for Ink Blockages:

  • Run a printhead cleaning cycle to ensure no blockages are preventing ink from being used.

Ink Cartridge Detection Errors:

  • If you continually receive incorrect ink alerts, it might be worth replacing the cartridge temporarily to see if the issue persists.
  • If the problem resolves with a new cartridge, the initial cartridge might be faulty.

Take care and have an amazing day!

It has been this way since I bought it. It has never printed past the half way mark. I did reach out in tbe beginning but got no resolution.  Nothing has helped. If it prints until it's half full, how are the cartridges not in correctly?

I flipped the tops up so you can see that they are HP cartridges.  At this point I think I'm just going to get another printer and different brand. I'm not ok with only getting half ink for my money.  Especially since this one is no longer under warranty.
