Thanks, but that was too easy. Its harder to get info from this knowledge base than it is to order an authentic HP cartridge from Amazon, am I right? I also tried the universal re-set. I shut off the printer and unplugged it from its power source.

Also I downloaded both a new print driver from HP.com, and new firmware.

The area that was streaking and blurring along the margin-- it got worse, meaning the area increased from about a quarter inch to a solid 1.25 inches. The amount of toner in the malprinted area did not increase; it didn't get any darker or worsen in that way.

I also ran the print utility for cleaning the printer "heads" whatever, over and over. No improvement.

My big break? a website called www.printertechs.com. The knowledgebase there included a similar problem. The diagnostic is to start printing a sheet of paper (with image or text), then STOP the printer by popping the lid. This interrupts the printing process, and it MAY show the toner on the page NOT blurred or streaked, but ALSO not "fused" to the surface of the paper.  You can smear the toner dust with your finger. If so, this diagnosis shows that the problem is with the printer "fuser".  However, for my printer, this problem cannot be repaired. My printer is a "toaster", a disposable printer, that lasted for 10 years.

Try printing with a different toner cartridge.
