Nothing in the manual mentions this setting. How do these choices affect quality from worst to best?

Print density and print quality are 2 different things, although our brains automatically assume that more dense print is better quality. The settings you are showing are for resolution, the higher number being better quality. Are you having a print density issue? If you print the document at all four settings you show you can compare. In some cases you will need a magnifying glass to see the difference.
