My printer has a constant low squealing sound when it's not printing, it's just always making this sound when it's plugged in.

Hi @rachelkiel,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for your message, and sorry to hear your HP Envy 6110e All-in-One printer is making a constant squealing noise. This is not expected behavior when the printer is idle.

Here are what steps to try in such cases:

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting for Constant Squealing Noise

1. Power Cycle the Printer

This can help clear any stuck motor or background process:

  • Turn off the printer
  • Unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet
  • Wait 60 seconds
  • Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors)
  • Turn the printer back on

See if the squealing continues when the printer is idle.

2. Listen Closely to Identify the Sound

Try to narrow down the type and location of the sound:

  • Is it coming from the rear? (could be the power supply or cooling fan)
  • Does it increase/decrease in pitch with activity?
  • Does it stop when the printer is powered off?

If the sound continues even after reboot, and especially when idle, it's likely a mechanical motor, fan, or internal coil noise (called coil whine).

3. Check for Firmware Update (via HP Smart app)

Sometimes, firmware updates can resolve strange hardware behavior:

  • Open the HP Smart app on your iOS device
  • Tap your printer → Go to Printer Settings > Advanced Settings

Check for Firmware Update and install if available

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

None of these suggestions solved the problem. The sound comes from the back left corner
