My M cartridge error is stating that it is not communicating correctly with printer and I have replaced the cartridge. What could be the problem.

Hi @elrichs

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand the concern. If your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 is displaying a message that the Magenta (M) cartridge is not communicating correctly with the printer even after replacing the cartridge, the issue can be related to cartridge contacts, printer contact pins, firmware communication, or cartridge compatibility.

Please try the following troubleshooting steps:

Confirm the replacement cartridge is the correct cartridge series designed for the HP OfficeJet Pro 7740.

Open the cartridge access door and remove the Magenta cartridge.

Inspect the copper-colored electrical contacts on the cartridge:

  • Ensure there is no protective tape remaining on the cartridge.
  • Check for ink buildup, debris, or visible damage.

Inspect the corresponding contact area inside the printer:

  • Look for bent, damaged, or contaminated contact pins.
  • If any debris is visible, gently clean it using a lint-free cloth.

Reinstall the Magenta cartridge firmly into its slot until it is fully seated.

Perform a power reset:

  • Turn the printer on.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait approximately 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord directly to the wall outlet and then to the printer.
  • Turn the printer back on if it does not start automatically.

If available, install another genuine HP Magenta cartridge to determine whether the replacement cartridge itself is defective.

From the printer control panel, check for printer firmware updates and install any available updates.

Print a Printer Status Report or Diagnostic Page. If the same Magenta cartridge communication error appears immediately, the printer may be unable to read the cartridge contacts correctly.

To help us narrow this down further, could you let us know:

  • Which Magenta cartridge number is installed (955, 955XL, 952, etc.)?
  • Is the replacement cartridge a genuine HP cartridge?
  • Does the printer display a specific error code or only the "not communicating correctly" message?
  • Have you tried more than one Magenta cartridge with the same result?

This information will help us provide more targeted guidance.

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Thanks for your reply, I am using an HP 952 cartridge. Another problem I am having since the error message is showing, it will not go to any other screen so that I can check any other things. Is there a way to ger around the message and get to the home screen?
