M281fdw suddenly stopped auto duplex printing - will only duplex in manual mode. Ran Print Doctor and it incorrectly identifies the printer as M281PCL(v4). How can I correct this mis-identification?

There is nothing likely wrong with the description, your problem is likely that the driver is not configured for duplex.
On your PC, go to control panel>devices and printers and then right click on the icon for your printer and then select printer properties from the drop down menu. Click on the device settings tab and scroll down in the installable options until you find duplexer and make sure it shows as installed, and change to installed if necessary.

RepairaTrooper:
Thanks for the suggestion - my screen didn't look at all like the one you display, but there was a selection for double-sided and that seems to correct the issue. Still a mystery to me why the printer which was previously properly described in the print options and driver menus suddenly and still identifies on my menus and the Print Doctor applet.as a PCL(v4) printer, which is not duplex-capable model. But what do I know? Thanks.

Windows or driver updates are the typical issue that causes this. If the printers are installed using Windows Print Management and are using a WSD port this can happen. We normally advise clients to disable WSD on the printer if at all possible, disable Windows Print Management and manually install using the correct HP driver (HP Universal Print Driver if your printer is supported)
