HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium e-All-in-One - N911n

I have an Officejet pro 8600 which has a print head issue.  I would still like to use the scanner but can't get passed the print head issue on the display.  Any way to still use the scanner ? (this is otherwise like having the discard your car because the tires are worn out/damaged.  If indeed unusable, then HP has a serious issue with creating more waste on a planet that has more waste than it can handle already.  And forget trying to get in touch with an HP customer service rep to explain that... good luck !!
