I bought my color cartridges 6 mos ago.  I cannot tell them now to return it. Price difference between 3rd party and hp color laserjet inks is astronomical. The set of 4 cmyk cartridges is $50 3rd party. $300 hp. They are not close to competitive. So HP is using this forcing tactic.

H_P_is-Terrible, I like your screen name.

It has been suggested that we just bite the bullet and buy HP cartridges but stuff that.  We are fortunate that we are a charity and are able to take advantage of a scheme that allows us to get a refurbished Xerox photocopier instead for a small monthly payment.   Will not be buying anymore HP printers, or even any HP product for that matter.

Thank you JonPierre. That worked for me too.

This is now fixed. I took JonPierre's fix, and connected my laptop to the printer by usb. then the firmware updated

Hi Steve.  I did find the downgrade confusing as once it has finished (you get a Smiley Emoticon to say it's complete) nothing appears to happen.  I downloaded the downgrade on a Tuesday morning, got fed up with waiting for it to kick in and then on Friday morning, the printer appeared to accept it and started to work.  The trick is to change the settings to NOT accept updates almost immediately otherwise HP will just upgrade everything again.    Also, it would appear that in order to get the printer to accept the downgrade you have set it so that both downgrades AND updates are acceptable..

The downgrade you've explained worked perfectly. And I stop the automatic updates. This one will be my last HP Printer for sure!

My printer was working fine with the cartridges until I loaded the new firmware yesterday. Now it looks like I will have to purchase new cartridges, if this is the case I will not purchase or recommend any HP products in the future

You say that this is the cartridge vendors problem & not mine but HP made it my problem with the new firmware update

Yes, HP did an update on my printer through an automatic update setting and now my printer is worthless as well. The cartridges were working fine, the HP chip check was obviously recently added. Thanks HP! You have lost another customer for life. Hope this decision on your part was worth it! I will tell everyone I know about this experience.
