Hi @randolfo3,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
I understand your HP Envy 4520 has suddenly started printing only in black and white, and you’re unable to find the grayscale or color options. Let’s go through steps to fix this issue.
1. Check Ink Levels
Open HP Smart App or HP Printer Assistant on your PC or Mac.
Ensure that the color cartridges are not empty or low. Low or empty cartridges can force the printer to print in black and white.
2. Check Print Settings
When printing a document, go to Print → Printer Properties / Preferences.
Look for:
Color Options → Make sure Color is selected instead of Black & White / Grayscale.
Some apps have their own print settings—check the settings inside the app you are printing from.
3. Perform a Printer Reset
Turn off the printer and unplug it from the wall.
Wait 60 seconds and then plug it back in and power it on.
This can clear temporary settings that force B/W printing.
4. Check Cartridges
Remove the color cartridge and inspect it for:
Protective tape still attached
Dirt on the contacts
Reinsert it properly, making sure it clicks into place.
5. Update or Reinstall Drivers
Go to HP Support → Enter your printer model → Download the latest full feature drivers.
Install them and try printing a color document again.
6. Print a Test Page
From HP Smart App / Printer Control Panel, print a color test page.
If the color prints on the test page, the issue may be software-specific.
7. Check for Software Overrides
Some applications (Word, PDF readers) have their own print settings.
Make sure color printing is enabled in the app, not just in printer settings.
I hope this helps.
I'm glad I could help! 😊 If this resolved your issue, please mark it as "Accepted Solution" and click "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?" Your feedback not only keeps us going but also helps others find the solution faster! 👍✨
