Hi @donnturner
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Envy 7640 is not printing black despite having clean and aligned the print heads and changed the cartridges, here are some additional troubleshooting steps you can try:
1. Check the Black Cartridge
- Install Correctly: Ensure the black cartridge is installed properly. Remove and reinstall it, making sure it clicks into place.
- Inspect for Damage: Check the cartridge for any damage or leaks. If it’s a refurbished or third-party cartridge, consider replacing it with an original HP cartridge.
2. Run the Print Head Cleaning Utility
- From Printer Menu:
- On the printer's control panel, go to Setup > Tools > Clean Printhead.
- From HP Software:
- Open the HP Smart app or the HP Printer Assistant on your computer and find the option to clean the print head.
3. Print a Test Page
- After cleaning, print a test page or a diagnostic page to check if black printing has improved.
4. Check Ink Levels
- In the HP Smart app, check the ink levels to confirm that the black cartridge has sufficient ink.
5. Check Print Settings
- Ensure that the print settings in your application are set to print in color or black as needed. Sometimes, settings can default to "Print in Grayscale."
6. Perform a Hard Reset
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for about 60 seconds, plug it back in, and turn it on.
7. Update Printer Firmware
- Visit the HP support website to check if there is a firmware update available for your printer. Updating the firmware can sometimes resolve printing issues.
8. Inspect Printhead Nozzles
- If the black ink is not flowing properly, the nozzles might be clogged. You can use a soft cloth or a cotton swab lightly moistened with distilled water to clean them.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

I tried everything on your list multiple times and still the printer is not printing black.
I went to the HP on-line help sites, followed the instructions and still no black printing.
I have to assume my printer is broken.
